When Parenting Goes Wrong… Kids Freak Fest!
My wife and I had just arrived home today from our son’s soccer practice when we heard our neighbor, yell out to her 6yr old son to “get your “A” over here “M_F‘er!” We couldn’t believe our ears. Why would she be talking to that child that way?
This isn’t the first time that I heard profanity coming from that home, although they usually wait until 2:30am, when the rest of the neighborhood is asleep, to curse someone out. This probably isn’t the first time that that child has heard those words either. But this is the first time I have ever heard anyone cuss out a 1st-grader. If her son is anything like my 6yr-old, then he just added that phrase to his own vocabulary…although, for him, it was probably already there from a previous cussin’ out.
It is not unusual to see this same 6yr-old with his three or four under-10yr-old siblings out, running the street, past 10:00PM. There is no telling what else he has been exposed to.
Children will hear, see, touch, taste, and say everything that they aren’t supposed to. They will go places they shouldn’t go, and do things they shouldn’t do. In today’s society, where often both parents have to work, families have less time to spend together. My kids get up at 6:30am and I drop them off at school by7:30 am. After school they go to daycare. I then pick them up at 5:00 pm on my way home from work. My wife gets home 30min later. My children go to bed at 7:30pm. So while our children were with other influences for approx 9hrs, we usually have only 2hrs to spend together as a family. During that time we have to prepare dinner, help with homework, prepare for tests, go over class work, etc.
Our situation is definitely not unique. Many families have similar schedules. We just have to maximize the small quantity of time we have together by turning it into quality time. Quality is better than quantity. I don’t think the mother of that 6yr-old has a job or is even looking for a one so she definitely has a large quantity of time.
We, as parents, all have to be firmly implanted in our children’s lives. More now than ever before. We have to actively “Teach” our children right from wrong and, here’s the clincher, also “Lead” by example. The “Do as I say, not as I do” ideology does not fly. If we don’t teach our children, someone or something else will.
We have to become our child’s greatest influence. There is no telling what they have been exposed to at school, daycare, or etc. so we have to be vigilant. We need to be their role-models. However, with that comes a huge responsibility. We have to actually be something worth them modeling themselves after.
We cannot be “best friends” with our children. Best friends do not discipline each other. Best friends are peers…social/emotional equals. Parents should not consider themselves their child’s equal. The child will reciprocate that idea. Try disciplining them after that!
We also have to help our children develop a conscience that will allow them to remove themselves from the desire to do something they know that they shouldn’t do. I remember a song my mother taught me when I was growing up. It went like this:

That song was scary to me when I was growing up. It made me think twice about doing something bad even if I could’ve gotten away with it freely. I could literally envision God standing over me with his arms folded and a look of disapproval on his face. That song puts some responsibility in the hands of the child. Our children are smart; they are quick learners. A lot of the time, a child will know that something “IS” wrong even if they do not know “WHY.” They will often know that they shouldn’t…even if you didn’t specifically instruct them not to. The song also helps reinforce the idea that even when Mommy and Daddy aren’t there…the Father is!
So what happens when the parents aren’t there for their children or teaching them right from wrong? What happens when adults treat children as their peers and allow the kids to act as if they were adults? Well…watch the following video.

This event is just one symptom of what ails our society. There is no need to compare abuse among cultures as ‘what’s worse’ because children are abused in any number of cultures and countries - usually without much publicity or fanfare. From child soldiers to child sex slaves to children being abused by religous figures. Then there’s teh not-so passive sbuse, the scantily clad sexually suggestive plotlines, videos, and explicit music lyrics that anyone with a radio or television can witness. It truly starts with community values….when we begin to embrace community standards about media and extend the bans on liquor and cigarettes to cover these equally mature themes - we will close the gap. I’m not saying that parents have no responsibility….quite teh contrary. But I’m also noting that even responsible parents have a very difficult time both keeping these adult themes out of their home and insulating their children from them when the kids are out. Children will be tempted….we must reduce the opportunity to view or listen to teh temptation - in the same way that mature themed video games are not supposed to be sold to kids.

I’ve been troubled in my soul since viewing this video. The adults attending this event should be charged with a crime and those with children should loose their parental rights until they have been mentally evaluated. We all share different vales and beliefs. However, we as humans especially women” should agree,diginity and the value of self respect is the greatest virtue lost in this situtation. These children are prime examples of what youths of today’s culture believe is appropriate behavior and good old fashion fun. I pray that this video will run its course and disintegrate from exsistence before these children come of age to really understand the vulger and inappropriate acts that they have displayed. These children have retained and regerutated a distasteful behavior that they have been exposed to by some individual. I have to agreee with most that this has nothing to do with white or black! This is most definetely a parenting issue, a child, no matter if white, black, chineese or indian should not be dancing like that. And the parents most definetely should not be video tapping it of all things. This is just really awful. The person that recorded this should be locked up. This is just one of the many reasons that society sees us as ignorant, worthless individuals. While we know this is not true, behavior of this nature just feeds into the stereotypes that society believes to be true. My main question is while these children are “dropping it like it’s hot” do they know their abc’s and 123’s?? Can they speak correct english not just ebonics? We just need to do better. This is the most distasteful video I have seen involving small children. They learned the dancing from somewhere and someone told these children this was okay. This is so sick. What is happening to the parents in our country? I am so tired of seeing kids acting out. It’s not about color. It’s about being a good parent and being a responsible adult. Best believe me I would have walked right up and snatched that little girl right up from between that little boy’s legs. But this is what happens when you let ‘the world’ raise your child. We have kids beating up on each other of you tube, starting fights and getting kidnapped thanks to myspace, and hit movies about teen pregnancy. It seems to me that it is now a struggle to keep children innocent. That should be a parent’s no. #1 priority. They will have plenty of time to be exposed to the corruption of our society. Please, let children be children. Monitor what they watch on T.V. Take them out to the park. Spend time with them. Pray with them. Go to church….TOGETHER, don’t just drop them off. We have to come togeher as a society and not try to point blame (we do that so we dont have to deal with the problem), but find the real source to this problem, and that is we as a people who call ourselves one nation under God and we do not live that way. God ask us to love him and to love our neighbors, instead we turn our back on both because we have our own issue. It is so easy to condem other for their wrong doing and there ignorance, but just think about how diiferent this society would be if we took God value to heart. You could have been that neighbor to say to the little girl’s mother or the little boy’s father that’s not cool to do, and it could have prevented this whole discussion, this tape would have never been made. The only good thing I think came from this tape was it allowed us to examine our lives and how sometimes we get blind sided by wanting acceptance vs. doing what’s right. Better to be a help than to be someone who just complains or just sits back and watch the show.
God Help Us! I pray that real Saints of God everywhere who see this tape will get on one accord and begin to pray for the next generation and the generations to come. My prayers go out to every child that was exposed to the perversions of that party. I shared this e-mail with others, as I know some people who freely allow their children to much freedom, and as a result they loose any sense of boundries. This is a classic example of what and where I’ll children will go, if not given boundries. This child has the ability to dance, and would probably make a decent life dancing, if it were only channelled in the right direction. She also does not appear to be shy, which would probably enhance her stage presence, we need to pray, and somebody who knows this child should reach out to help.

It is clear that we are all disgusted by what we have seen. The parents of those children are probably the product of a generational cycle that began on the slave plantation. Poor parenting. Remember, slaves did not have the luxury of parenting their children because the majority of them were working in the field from dawn til dusk. Also, slavery was an institution that encouraged and bred ignorance. Yeah, chattel slavery has been abolished but it still exists in the minds of whole neighborhoods. Black men with several baby mommas like the male slaves sent by the slave master from plantation to plantation with the sole purpose of impregnating girls. Male breeders. Mothers constantly yelling profanity at their children instead of speaking words of encouragement into their lives like the slave master who yelled profanity and degrading words to keep his nigras in a lowly state of mind. My parents worked full time jobs and we (4 girls) were home alone a lot , but we did our homework, ate and showered and we still had time to play barbies, hide and seek and pogs….boy have times changed and I’m only 24!
I work for social service in the child maltreatment department, but this is one time I would have told her parents to beat that ass. She will be pregnant the minute she sees her menstrual cycle and her mother should not say anything because look how she’s raising her.

This is absolutely heart breaking! Those poor children don’t have a chance. With so called parents who would allow such actions and other adults standing around watching this and finding humor in it. What happened to our village? There is no way this would take place in my presence and I don’t care if the the so called parents would get upset. Back in the day, if you did something in the street, your neighbor would say something to you, call your parents and let them know what you were doing and then your parents would get on your case too. this is pain to my heart to see you teach your young girls and boys such. It is a disgrace to our forefarters who fought for us and this is the thanks we give back. This should not have been taped at all but disciplined from the get go. Dirty dancing is for married people in their own bedrooms not on the tube. This is sad and I shed tears as I look at this.
I’d love to say that somewhere in here we are all looking at the fact that adults who have decided to care for these children have truly lost their minds because they believe wholeheartedly that this is right and okay and see absolutely nothing wrong in the behavior they encouraged. Unfortunately, the babies in this video will continue the cycle of low self-esteem, low moral value and poor decision making based on what they have been taught is acceptable.
It doesn’t matter if they are Caribbean, Cuban, Chinese or White who gives a damn you can’t justify it because they are of another ethnic/cultural group and say oh it’s not my people and step off. They’re babies of color who will grown into young men and women of color with poor vision of who and what they are.

The video is pretty sad but what is worse is that some people actually thought this was cute, hence the reason for the video. I am sure the parents of this child are very young themselves and probably don’t recognize the error of their ways. We are fast to criticize but not that quick to offer a solution or a helping hand. Remember, it takes a village. Those children are innocent and in their minds I am sure they seen it as just dancing, nothing more nothing less. It is up to us to explain to them why that style of dancing is not appropiate.
As for Jim, you need to remove the word Big from your name because anyone who makes comments such as yours, is small, small minded that is. You speak of white values…what are white values? I would love an explanation of that. Last time I checked the majority of shootings taking place in schools, taking the lives of the innocent, were done by WHITE children. Again, what are these white values you speak of? Is it the burning of crosses on lawns and not being man enough to look your victims in the face because you are too busy running scared under your big white sheet? Or perhaps it’s the degrading and the selling of people who possess a tan that is darker than your own. (Yeah, that one made a lot of sense.) This is horrible! Children mirror what they see. They have seen this characterization and it’s been reinforced by those older than them. I don’t say parents b/c parents don’t do this. Don’t ask where they are b/c it’s apparent they don’t have adults in their life. Adults/parents guide, nurture and instruct. This behavior is evidence of no guidance, no instruction and no nurturing (to care and respect for self)

You know I watched this video and thought to myself, “What the hell is going on. These children are being video pimped and it’s being allowed by whatever adults bought them here.” Then I read the comments and I was even more disgusted! This people have issues that need to be addresses. They don’t need to be shot nor do they need to be arrested, they need to be helped! We as a society are asking for change! We are asking for help for the underpriviledged! We are changing history with our right to vote. Now we NEED to help our future. When we see stuff like this we need to dish out reality checks. If your in a situation like this the paerent needs to be checked and so does the momma. If the momma comes out the bag you jump out with her. But at least the child and the momma will wonder-after that confrontation-”what happened? how did i end up there?” If not I guarantee you that if they tell any 10 people the story at least 8 of the people will go, “they were right, them kids ain’t have no business windin’ up on each other like that!” Thinking encourages forward progress. Oh so sad. I feel so sorry for these children for they know not what they do. I notice there are so many children there being influenced by this sickening behavior. We need prayer back in the schools for this is the only time some of these children are exposed to any type of religion. Jesus help us for these children are our future.

I am a black woman who is married with two small children. I am a professional and so is my husband. We do not speak this way to our children nor do any of our professional friends (black or white) speak this way to theirs. It saddens me when I here our children being spoken to in this manner and when I hear about the gangs violence and the number of our youth in juvenile detention leading to jail. How many of these children, men and women were spoken to in this manner? The negative behavior was learned somewhere and unfortunately this is probably where it began. What chance are these children ever going to have when the first things they hear is this type of language to others and to them. This is the most embrassing thing that I have ever seen. For anyone to enjoy something like this is very sick and need medical attention immediately especially the person that is recording this. I think that it is hard to watch our children every move but we differently need to watch who they hang around. This is very sad and I hope that somebody show this video to that little girl and let her see just how bad and nasty this look.
To Jim, I don’t know what you meant by “you people” and the other ignorant remarks you made but these people are not black american people, they are carribean people since you felt it your place to judge. I guess I can assume you have no friends of color, but regardless of what their race may be this is terrible overall that these children are encouraged to behave this way and I would be embarrassed to see anyone allowing and encouraging their children to behave this way. These children right now will not be held accountable for what has occurred. They are victims, as some of us all may have been at their age.
