Apparently some Pastors are using their pulpits to endorse a candidate in this election. I have mixed emotions about this. I believe that a pastor should have the right to make it known who they will vote for and why they will vote for them. I believe that a pastor should have an interest in the community and therefore politics.

However, does a pastor have the authority to say “Who”  his congregation should vote for? if so, who gives him that authority…show me where. Whose WILL is the pastor enforcing? Does a church-member have the right to ask God who to vote for instead of relying on the Pastor’s will? If a church-member votes opposite of the Pastor, are they committing a sin?

Obama is being attacked by the “Religious Right” because of his stance on abortion and gay marriage. Some christians will overlook every other sin except those two. They could care less about:

1. Loving their neighbors(even homosexuals and deathrow inmates)
2. not lying (George Bush)
3. not stealing (as in Golden Parachute)
4. not coveting (as in I will not covet my neighbor’s oil)
5. not committing adultery (one of the presidential candidates has while the other hasn’t)

Our current economic crisis and on-going War in Iraq can be traced directly to the first three listed.

I am against both abortions and gay marriage. If you are a Christian, the answer is clear. They are both sinful behavior. Christians can’t endorse sinful behavior…or can they.

I want to address abortion.

What sin does abortion break? As far as I can tell, abortion is murder. Thou shalt not kill. That was easy enough. Abortion was banned in the Ten Commandments. But what about Capital Punishment? That’s murder as well. Who gives us the authority to condemn someone to death? Where is the uproar from the religious right concerning the Death Penalty! Here is a radical concept. The people on death row, usually have committed the most heinous crimes and may still be unrepentant/unsaved. Unborn babies are sinless. When either are murdered (abortion or death penalty) where do they go? Even if there was a 5000:1 abortion to death penalty ratio, that 1 death row murder would be more important if the inmate was unsaved. I’m not endorsing abortions. I lost a baby daughter to illness. I get comfort in knowing where she is now. She was not of the age of understanding.  Little children die and go to heaven. Where do unrepentant death-row inmates that are lawfully murdered go?

Obama does not support abortions. He does however advocate finding and fixing the root of the problem. Stopping unwanted pregnancies in the first place is a proactive solution. Banning abortions is a reactive and after-the-fact attempt at solving the  problem. Banning abortions will not change the rate of unwanted pregnancies. It will help increase the number of children:

1. born into poverty,
2. dropped of at hospitals and orphanages,
3. born addicted to drugs,
4. abused by unfit parents
5. killed by unfit parents

Be careful for what you ask for.

As Christians, we can’t make people live or believe the same as we do. Christ didn’t do that. So why do we try to force our beliefs on people instead of just living our beliefs, glorifying the Father, and allowing our example to draw men to Jesus? That’s because we are pushing our own agendas instead of His.

GREENVILLE, S.C.  —  A white South Carolina trooper has been acquitted of violating the civil rights of a black man who was struck by the officer’s cruiser.
A federal jury returned the verdict Friday after a four-day trial that hinged in large part on a video from Lance Cpl. Steven Garren’s patrol car.

The tape shows Marvin Grant running in front of Garren’s cruiser after a brief car chase ended in June 2007. Grant is struck and flips over the hood of the patrol car. Garren later bragged on the tape that he deliberately hit Grant.

Garren was charged with using unreasonable force that deprived Grant of his civil rights. The officer could have faced up to 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine if he had been convicted. Source

In case you were wondering exactly what Gov. Sarah Palin was taught during her week long attendance at John McCains “Debate Camp”, we have the answer for you. A resounding…. ”Nothing!”

She wasn’t taught anything about the economy, Iraq, health-care, or anything the American people wanted her to talk about.

Instead all we were exposed to were gasps, sighs, and deer-in-headlight backed “golly gee’s”. A couple of hockey-mom and joe six-pack references rounded out the summary of her answers. Oh, and let us not forget her annoying proclamations that John McCain is a maverick. She even tried to include herself in that description.

What is a maverick?

According to the American Heritage Dictionary, a maverick (when used as an adjective) is: Being independent in thought and action or exhibiting such independence.
When used as a noun, a maverick is:
One that refuses to abide by the dictates of or resists adherence to a group; a dissenter.

In my opinion, that’s not necessarily a good thing. President Bush is a maverick. Look at Bush’s approval ratings, the lowest in history. The majority of Americans didn’t want to go into Iraq. He did. That seems to qualify as being independent in thought to me. The group he fails to adhere to is the American people. He’s disconnected from regular folks.

 John (the economy is fundamentally sound)McCain is likewise just as divorced from the working class. He is going to try and destroy Obama’s character here in the last weeks before the election. What a hypocrite. How can a man that left his middle-class, disabled wife (who faithfully waited for him when he was a POW) for a 15yr younger, rich girl be a judge of good character?

And what is there left to say about Sarah (Duh?) Palin. She is like a living, breathing “Wanna get away?” Southwest Airline commercial. She needs to take that endorsement money and cash it in for a one-way ticket to Hopelessly Lost Somewhere.

So if Sarah Palin and John McCain want to consider themselves to be “mavericks” then I am inclined to believe them.

Palin’s answer almost reminds me of Miss South Carolina’s answer in the Miss Teen Usa 2007 competition.

With voter registration deadlines looming for all of us it is important for all of us to make sure that we, our friends, and our families our registered and eligible to vote.  Different states have different deadlines.  If you are a college student and plan to vote in the state of the college you attend which is not the state you claim residency in, you may have to vote by absentee ballot. Wednesday night on “The Daily Show,” Jon Stewart hit Karl Rove and Bill O’Reilly with damning evidence of their hypocrisy regarding Vice Presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

While Rove recently praised Palin’s experience as the mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, Stewart showed video of Rove trashing Virginia Governor — and former Richmond Mayor — Tim Kaine’s executive experience, listing all the cities that are bigger than Richmond and calling such a pick “political.”

Then, after recent video of O’Reilly describing Bristol Palin’s pregnancy as a family issue, Stewart showed a clip of the Fox News host blaming Jamie Lynn Spears’ parents for her teenage pregnancy.

Finally, after showing video of Dick Morris complaining about the rampant sexism in the media coverage of Sarah Palin, Stewart unveiled a clip of Morris saying that Hillary hides behind the sexism defense, and that anytime “the big boys” pick on Hillary, “she retreats behind the apron strings.”

“In Dick Morris’ defense,” Stewart said, “he is a lying sack of sh*t.”

And the Republicans have the nerve to try and label Obama as a Flip-Flopper???????

Are Nelly’s “Tip Drill” and The “Kid’s Freak Fest!” Videos Related? Did one birth the other?

Hip hop artist Nelly has a message for all you silly women fretting about girls seeing his “Tip Drill” video: it’s all your fault.

OK, so that’s not exactly what he said in the December issue of “Sister 2 Sister” magazine, but it’s pretty darn close.

For those of you who may have been out of the hip hop video loop that includes “Tip Drill” — and the controversy surrounding it — here’s a brief summary. Think of a hip hop or rap video with plenty of scantily clad women shaking booties and simulating sex acts. In other words, think of your standard hip hop or rap video.

Then think of one that goes waaaayyy beyond those. You’ve got “Tip Drill.” Some women at Spelman College found the images of their gender so offensive in the video that they asked Nelly to pass on his scheduled appearance at the school earlier this year, even though the hip-hop artist was coming for a cause unquestionably worthy: to get black folks signed up as bone marrow donors.

Nelly, for the life of him, can’t figure out what all the fuss is about. “Tip Drill” is, according to Nelly, “adult entertainment.” His daughter can’t watch it, and neither should yours.

At first brush, this sounds almost reasonable. Nelly’s point was driven home to me when I chatted with a class of eighth graders at a Baltimore middle school recently. Trying to engage the students in something I figured they knew about — the hip-hop world — I asked if they had heard of the controversy with Nelly, “Tip Drill” and Spelman College.

They hadn’t. But about 10 of them — only one a girl — said they had seen the video. Figuring I was rolling the dice with my sanity, I decided to push for more answers.

“Where did you see the video?” I asked all those who had raised their hands.

“BET Uncut,” answered one.

“BET Uncut,” said a second.

BET Uncut was the most frequent answer.

“And what time does ‘BET Uncut’ come on?” I asked.

They correctly chorused “3 o’clock in the morning.”

“And where are your parents when you’re watching this?” their teacher asked.

“Asleep,” they answered.

There are quite a few American parents asleep at the switch when it comes to what their 13- and 14-year-olds are doing at 3 o’clock in the morning. So Nelly may have a point when he chides those parents who would let their daughters watch “Tip Drill.”

Why he didn’t show the same concern for whether their sons watch the video perhaps indicates the problem those Spelman women had with Nelly and “Tip Drill.” This guy may be able to sing, but he doesn’t seem to be the sharpest knife in the drawer.

What those Spelman women were saying is that they found “Tip Drill” filled with degrading images and stereotypes of black women. Is Nelly really saying degrading and stereotypical images are acceptable as long as we keep them away from the kiddies?

Let me draw an analogy here. In my writing class at Johns Hopkins University — which usually has mostly white and Asian students — I showed some 1940s cartoons that viciously stereotyped black people. I did it to show the students that the racism black folks had to overcome wasn’t just manifested in some segregation laws on the books. It seeped into the entire culture.

Perhaps those young ladies at Spelman should invite Nelly back, strap him in a chair, lock him in a room and have him watch some of those old cartoons. They can throw in the worst of the movies from that era that cruelly stereotyped black folks in the same way.

Then they should ask Nelly if those stereotypes are perfectly fine because he’s watching them and not his daughter.

Women have had to endure not only sexism but sexist stereotypes through the years. Those stereotypes aren’t any less offensive because we keep them away from children.

I suspect most of the black women at Spelman don’t even have daughters. The issue for them isn’t who watches “Tip Drill,” but the message in it. All they’re asking of Nelly is what he doesn’t seem to have: a little empathy.
